The forced resignation of Toby Young highlights everything that is wrong with modern political discourse.
Sensationalism, hysteria, faux outrage and attacks on freedom of speech, while the real issues of the day go by with little notice and care. All encapsulated in this one forced resignation. He made some comments about women’s breasts once, so what. We all have moments of shallowness, this is totally human, perhaps unwise to air in public, but hardly crime of the century.
You might think his comments distasteful but that does not take away from the fact that the man is competent, has a track record of defending liberty and has had huge success with the free schools he helped set up. He would have brought much needed balance to the board of the university regulator he was supposed to take a seat on. The fact that he has been taken down by the mob in the same way that university activists are no platforming right wing speakers on campuses across the country, shows how much he was needed.
The truth is no one, neither you, nor I, nor the professionally outraged left wing twitter mob/religious police believe Toby Young is a sexist, a racist, a homophobe or a classist bigot. This is simply the new and might I add highly effective tactic of leftist bullies. The conservatives won at the ballot box and are perfectly well entitled therefore to shape policy on education. Yes, that does mean the government placing it’s chosen representatives on the boards of its own regulators.
This idea that you can lose an election but then sabotage your opponents through cyber bullying and a whipped up frenzied media is truly scary and will have disastrous consequences for our country. We are supposed to be the United Kingdom, not the Islamic republic of Pakistan. Indeed, there are striking similarities between how religious puritans have people moved from public office in theocratic states and how this middle class hate mob now operates.
And I talk mention the media here because the story of Toby Young’s resignation broke at the same time as the government was going through a reshuffle yet this seemed to be the BBC’s main news story. You would think the resignation of the education secretary or the changes in the department of justice for instance, might take presidency over a man who has one seat amongst many, on a quango that no one had ever heard of. Sensationalism it seems is now the order of the day. We should be ignoring these morons, not making them headline news.
We all need to stop and think about where the country is going to go if this type of behaviour is allowed to persist in our political discourse. There will be many competent people, full of ideas, people who would be great in public roles turning away. Understandably thinking that it is not worth the headache. We will be left with the robotic, the incompetent and the out of touch.
