We are yet to hear the full details of the events in London yesterday however it does appear this was an Islamist inspired terrorist attack. The fact that in 21st century enlightened Britain there are people who believe that by committing such acts, they are doing God’s work, tells us that we as a country have made some serious mistakes.
We have allowed this poisonous Islamist ideology to infiltrate our communities. Though the prism of multi culturalism, we have tolerated the bigotry of the section of the Muslim community which is sympathetic to these ideas. In out attempts to be inclusive and tolerant, we have allowed political correctness to stop us from challenging ideas which are alien to values of the free world. In doing so we have harmed the Muslim community by lowering their horizons, the very people we were trying to protect.
I am sure the usual suspects will come out in the coming days, blaming socio-economic factors, questioning the mental health of this man, saying he isn’t a “real” Muslim and all the other things apologists do without tackling the real issue. The problem is these people do not come out of a vacuum.
Yesterday my colleague wrote a short obituary of Martin McGuinness. I draw comparisons with these Islamists to the IRA. We all know what the IRA stood for, they wanted a united Ireland and were trying to achieve this via violence. We also know that though most disagreed with the violence, there were and are many who agree with the cause.
The same is true with Islamism, there are many who support the ideas that these morons represent but don’t condone the violence. In this case however, there is no political road for Islamists to go down. Islamism therefore is more dangerous, we cannot negotiate or reason with it, it is a collection of ideas that must be destroyed.
A lot will be written in the coming days as the country searches for answers. Right now my heart goes out to those that lost their lives yesterday, stolen from them without just cause.
