Silly season ends with the left losing their minds. Yesterday we had leftist writer and broadcaster Afua Hirsch writing in the guardian, call for the toppling of the statue of Nelson in Trafalgar square. Today we had first Labour MP Chris Williamson claim there was merit in the idea of all women carriages on trains. In some sort of left-wing stupidity arms race another Labour MP deciding she did not wanting to be outdone by her comrades, publicly talks about female Tory MP’s as if they were creatures from the underworld. So much for the sisterhood.
Vice Admiral Nelson
The monuments in America’s deep south commemorating General Lee and other confederate figures were erected with the explicit purpose of reminding the black community who is boss. Though I personally believe these statues should be left in place with the history of the U.S. civil war taught. Turning these monuments into historical reminders rather symbols of oppression and hate. It is perfectly understandable if the community in those areas wish to have them removed. Indeed in that particular case it would be perfectly justifiable.
To lump the figure of Nelson in the middle of Trafalgar square with the figures of Lee et al in the U.S. is a complete false equivalency. All of us in Britain know Nelson as the man who gave his life in the battle of Trafalgar, fighting for Britain against Napoleon. He is remembered not for his political views but for his sacrifice. The square is named after that battle for god sake. We cannot make historical figures clean by today’s modern standards we can only observe and learn from our history and move forward.
All Women Train Carriages
When Jeremy Corbyn pulled this idea out of his backside during his first leadership campaign two years ago, it was right lampooned. If you are taking advice on how to treat women from the Taliban, you are in the wrong place. It does not take a great deal of thought to come the conclusion that if you truly believe in equality, the way to deal with gropers on the train network is to catch them, than name and shame them. This image which has gone viral on twitter says more than I could in a thousand words:
The Zealous Idiot
The worst from the left over the past couple of days, comes from the intellectual titan that is the Labour MP for North West Durham Laura Pidcock. In an interview with a Labour supporting blog she said she would never be friends with a conservative. Going on to say “she wouldn’t hang out with Tory women” and that they are “no friends of mine” and “an enemy to lots of women”. On the face it these sound like harmless comments. We all have every right to choose who we spend our time with and who our friends are.
With some thought, it is impossible not to see how stupid this type of mentally is. It is tantamount to saying I am so blinded by arrogance that I believe everyone who disagrees is evil. I am so insecure in my views that you are not allowed to be my friend if you challenge them. This is the type of belief system you see with religious fundamentalists. Not based on logic or reason but pure fanaticism. I think it is time we made MP’s start taking verbal and numerical reasoning tests as you do when you apply for private sector jobs. The process is not rigorous enough, I am all for having a diverse range of MP’s but that has to be second to having at least a base level of intelligence. Politics is after all the realm of the intellectual.
