This week the leader of the Liberal Democrats Tim Farron tendered his resignation. In his resignation speech, he cited his inability to reconcile his Christian beliefs with being leader.
I should be honest here, my personal opinion of Tim Farron has always been that he is a lightweight. My personal feelings aside it is absolutely clear that this is a man with a huge heart who has been forced out for the wrong reasons. While no one else seems to give a damn, he has been absolutely resolute in his stance on wanting to help those fleeing the war in Syria.
The following video is an excerpt from his 2015 conference speech, despite not getting a huge amount of coverage and the agenda having moved on, he is the only political leader that has not dropped the issue since.
To be a liberal does not mean you are not entitled to your own beliefs, it is simply the belief in freedom. It is the belief that whatever one’s personal views, as long as you do not cause others harm you are entitled to them. In practical political terms this means that the state guarantees the rights and equal treatment of all of its citizens. Sadly this is a distinction that most of our people do not seem to understand.
The hypocritical thing is, this country has never had an atheist prime minister. The same line of questioning could have been used on Theresa May, David Cameron, Gordon Brown and Tony Blair. Each would have had the same difficulties.
There are millions of people in this country who have strong religious convictions. What kind of message does this say to them? You are not allowed to get involved in public life, if you do you are going to be hounded to death on religious scripture.
Forcing him out in this way shows Britain may not be the liberal open minded fair nation we all like to think we are.
